Just hearing it brings me back. The memories and the people and the place rapidly flood my mind with vivid images and emotions. For me, it’s Mumford & Sons, “I Will Wait”. Every time I hear this song, even just the chorus, I am transported back eight months to a club in Dublin, Ireland, jumping up and down and belting the lyrics with total strangers and one friend to a single guitarist playing cover. This song was the soundtrack of my trip to Ireland and brings back one of the best times of my life.
This got me thinking. Maybe we have soundtracks for all of our best memories. After all, isn’t this what we love about music? The melodies and the bridge, the lyrics and the imagery. The best songs are the ones that evoke emotion and feeling, that connect the listener to the music and to the artist. Think about it. What makes your favorite song, your favorite song? Sometimes the artist simply has a captivating voice and sometimes the lyrics really hit home with you. Whatever it is, it is unique to each person. This is what makes independent artists so great, their music, often times, is not made and tweaked and analyzed for mass appeal. This leaves the listener with a more personal experience; the music is personal to the artist and personal to the listener. Billboard features the chart for the top independent artists, but don’t forget, there are tons of independent artists out there just waiting to be discovered by their next biggest fan.
Unfortunately and, to our dismay, summer will soon come to an end, school will begin, the leaves will change and begin their descent. It’s all terribly depressing, but whether it was a summer of love, break-up, or fun, there is a song that played on repeat, a soundtrack to summer. Take a second to consider – what is the soundtrack to your summer? Feel free to share with us!
